DragonVale's own store page sums up its loop in one line: "Breed two dragons. Find out what hatches. Then do it hundreds of times over!" Around that loop sit floating islands, habitats matched to each element, a Dragonarium that records everything you've bred, and events that have run for over a decade. Games like DragonVale keep some of that and change the rest. The eight below are sorted by how much they keep.
One of them, Dragonbred, is our game. It's marked as ours, and it is the one furthest from DragonVale's style, which we say plainly below. Facts about the other games come from their store pages, official sites and wikis, checked in October 2026.
What DragonVale does that others copy
Before the list, here's the DragonVale loop the closest alternatives share:
- Breeding by element. The elements of a pair decide which hybrids the egg can be, and rare results have low odds.
- A park to build. Islands, habitats for each element, decorations, farms that grow treats.
- A book to fill. Hundreds of dragons, with limited ones returning only during events.
- Friends, lightly. You can visit parks, send gifts and breed with a friend's dragon in the Cooperative Breeding Cave. We found no way to trade dragons themselves.

Closest to DragonVale: build, breed, collect
Dragon City
Dragon City is the nearest match, and the one with the most to do. Socialpoint launched it on Facebook in 2012; it now runs on iOS, Android and Windows. You build a floating city of farms, habitats and training buildings, and breed hybrids from over 2,000 dragons across dozens of elements. Its wiki explains that the game picks each egg at random from what that pairing can make. The Book of Dragons is its Dragonarium.
The big difference is combat. Dragon City has real-time PvP arenas, alliances and elemental strengths and weaknesses to plan around. Its Trading Hub swaps Orbs, which power dragons up, but not dragons. It suits DragonVale players who wish their dragons did something once they hatched.
Dragon Mania Legends
Gameloft's Dragon Mania Legends is the closest in tone. Since 2015 it has had you shape islands with farms, habitats and decorations, hatch dragons by pairing species (the store page counts over a thousand), and feed, pet and train them as they grow. The official site posts a dragon of the week with the two parents that breed it, which saves some guesswork. Clans let you chat, visit islands and swap gifts. Wikipedia puts it past 222 million downloads.
It suits DragonVale players who like the cute side most.
My Singing Monsters
My Singing Monsters from Big Blue Bubble swaps dragons for monsters that each sing their part of a song, "a living, breathing instrument." It has run on iOS since 2012 and free on Steam since 2021. Breeding is element combination, like DragonVale's: its wiki says a new monster carries all the elements of its parents unless one repeats, and some special monsters need two specific parents. There are over 500 monsters and more than 35 islands to decorate.
It suits players who love hunting for breeding combinations and don't need the creatures to be dragons.
Monster Legends
Socialpoint's other big game, Monster Legends, has run since 2013. You build a monster island with habitats tied to elements, farms and a Breeding Mountain, and its wiki says the elements of the parents are the only factor in what hatches: each parent gives the baby one. It has over 900 monsters, and the store page puts real-time PvP and team wars front and center.
It suits players who want DragonVale's island and a deep battle game on top.
Same feel, different loop
Dragons: Rise of Berk
Ludia's Dragons: Rise of Berk is the How to Train Your Dragon game, on iOS since 2014, also on Android, and still updated. You build your own Berk, explore 70 islands and collect more than 750 dragons from the films and series in 3D. Its store page talks about rescuing, hatching and training dragons rather than breeding them. Besides in-app purchases, it offers a $9.99 monthly membership.
It suits fans of the films who like DragonVale's village-building.
Merge Dragons!
Merge Dragons! from Gram Games has no breeding at all. You merge three matching objects into a better one, dragon eggs included, and the dragons that hatch roam your camp harvesting for you. There are over 180 puzzle levels and new dragon breeds with each themed event.
It suits DragonVale players whose favorite part is laying out and growing their islands.
If you want breeding that goes deeper
These two drop the park. In both, a baby's look comes from its own parents, not from a list of possible hybrids.
Flight Rising
Flight Rising is a free browser game that has run since 2013. Each dragon has three genes shown in 177 colors, and babies inherit colors and genes from their parents, so you breed toward a look rather than toward a species. It has an Auction House where players sell dragons and items, something DragonVale lacks. Our guide to games like Flight Rising compares it in detail.
Dragonbred (our game)
Dragonbred is the furthest from DragonVale on this list. There is no park, no habitats, no quests and no battles. What it keeps is the collecting: a field guide of 28 morphs, grades from Common to Legendary, and a combinations book that pairs every body color with every element. The first keeper to hatch each look, or each square of the book, holds that world first forever.
The breeding works like real genetics. Elements are genes, not recipes. Lava, the one element so far, is recessive and fills a dragon's markings, so two Lava parents always hatch Lava, and a Lava bred to a dragon without it gives babies that all carry it hidden. Lava enters the game only through the Lava Crate, where each crate has a 2% chance of a Lava dragon, and the free Daily Pass gives a Lava Crate on days 7 and 30. Lava dragons and elements covers the rest.
Timers will feel familiar: a clutch warms for as long as the rarest look it could hatch calls for, from 3 minutes for Common and 10 for Uncommon to an hour for Rare, two for Epic and Mythic, and four for a Legendary, and babies grow up in the nursery for 23 to 44 hours. Unlike DragonVale, you can sell and trade dragons with other players. It plays in the browser on a phone or a computer; the iPhone app isn't out yet.
