How the dragon breeding calculator works
This dragon breeding calculator works out the odds of any pairing before you breed it. Describe each parent gene by gene: what it shows, what it carries for certain (a het), and what it might carry (a possible het, with its chance). The cards then list every look an egg can hatch, rarest first, with its chance per egg.
It covers all 21 genes a keeper can get in the game today. Every egg is rolled on its own, so a 25% card is each egg's chance, not a promise of one egg in four. Looks at 1% or less fold into Long shots, as they do in the game. The address bar holds the pairing, so a link to this page brings the same pair back.
How to read the odds
- Recessive. Albino, Striped, Piebald and Lava need two copies to show. Het Albino × het Albino hatches 25% Albino and 75% normal-looking babies, and two in three of those normals carry Albino: 67% het.
- Incomplete dominant. Golden, Dark, Red and Spotted show with one copy, and two copies make the super form. Golden × Golden hatches 25% Pale Gold, 50% Golden and 25% Normal.
- Dominant. Ringtail, Blue Belly and Firetip show with one copy, and two copies look the same. One Ringtail gene with a Normal hatches 50% Ringtail.
- Hets and possible hets. A het carries a gene for certain; a possible het's percentage is the chance it does. A 66% het Albino bred to a het Albino hatches 16.5% Albino: 66% of 25%.
For the Punnett squares behind these numbers, read how to read breeding odds. Hets and possible hets explains where percentages like 66% come from, and dragon genetics 101 covers every way a gene is inherited. To breed the pair for real, play Dragonbred, a free dragon breeding game in your browser.
Questions
- Is this the same math the game uses?
- Yes. The calculator runs Dragonbred's own odds engine, the code behind the odds cards on the Breed tab, in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and you don't need to sign in.
- What does 67% het mean?
- It is the chance that a normal-looking dragon carries one hidden copy of a recessive gene. Breed two hets and two of every three normal-looking babies carry it, so each is 67% het (66% to many keepers).
- If a card says 25%, will one egg in four hatch it?
- Not exactly. Each egg is rolled on its own, so a clutch of four can hatch none, one or several. A clutch is one to six eggs, and over many eggs the share comes out near 25%.
- Does inbreeding change the odds?
- Not the odds per egg. In the game, related parents lay fewer eggs and fewer of them hatch, but every egg that does hatch has the chances shown here.
